Rhode Island Academy of Family Physicians

The Rhode Island Academy of Family Physicians (RIAFP) is an over 185-member Rhode Island affiliate of the American Academy of Family Physicians, the largest primary care physician organization in the United States.

Our organization supports ongoing physician education, works with residents in primary care, and advocates public policies to improve the health care system. We work with the Rhode Island Medical Society and the Rhode Island Department of Health, to achieve those aims.

Our members staff private practices and community health centers, deliver babies, make home visits, and treat patients at every hospital in Rhode Island. Our doctors work with schools, day care centers and nursing homes and care for entire families from every community in the state.

The mission of the Rhode Island Chapter of the American Academy of Family Physicians is to promote excellence in health care and the betterment of the health of the American people.

What is Family Medicine?

Family medicine is a primary health care specialty in which individuals and families are provided continuing and comprehensive health care.

Family physicians see people in their own communities, and treat men, women and children of all ages, races and economic circumstances.

Though family practitioners represent only about 7 percent of the state’s physicians, they care for nearly a third of all Rhode Island children and more than one third of all Rhode Island adults.
