A Medical Odysseys Book Signing and authors reception was held on December 15. A sizable crowd filled the Lownes Room at the Hay Library and enjoyed refreshments, the speakers program, the opprtunity to meet the authors and to show for support RIMS.

November 1: Last call for e-prescribing exemptions
before Medicare penalties hit on January 1

RI physicians who prescribe for Medicare patients should by now either be well-established electronic prescribers, or they should have secured an exemption. Physicians who do not prescribe electronically for Medicare patients and do not have an exemption will see their Medicare payments reduced by 1% starting January 1. 2011 ACCME Eastern Regional CME Accreditor Conference

This event, held at RIMS, brought together State Medical Society recognized accreditors from across the country to discuss the national accreditation system and to share best practices for accrediting community-based CME programs. RIMS welcomes Brown's first-year medical students

Students Grayson Armstrong and Rahul Banerjee, and RIMS' Megan Turcotte attended the medical school orientation in August to introduce the students to RIMS and encourage membership. Together they welcomed 64 new members.

 
RI student wins national contest and donates her prize

Our state Tar Wars winner, Alana McGuinness, won the national Tar Wars poster contest last week in Washington, DC. It is the first time in RI Tar Wars’ 18-year history that a RI student won the national competition. Alana plans to donate her $2000 prize to her school and to the Tar Wars program. Rosemary Maher, ACSW, LICSW, Director of RIMS Physicians' Health Services, was honored by the National Association of Social Workers, RI Chapter as the 2011 Social Worker of the Year in Health/Mental Health.

Mentally ill patients may wait in emergency rooms for days before being moved to a psychiatric unit or hospital. Emergency physicians and administrators in RI acknowledge the problem and are seeking solutions.

Affordable Care Act (ACA) and the AMA

The Affordable Care Act includes many major provisions that are consistent with AMA policy and hold the potential for a stronger, better performing health care system. Many provisions will not become effective until 2014 or later. This will give the AMA, state and specialty societies the opportunity to have maximum input in the regulatory process and to seek further legislative changes.

Judge finds for the State on provider taxes

In a case that has ramifications for doctors of all specialties and across the nation, a Rhode Island judge has rejected RIMS’ challenge to the constitutionality of the state’s “surcharges” (provider taxes) on certain medical imaging and ambulatory surgical services.
