URGENT

Help RIMS fight arbitrary physician provider tax

As of July 1, RI law imposes a new 2% gross receipts tax on physicians who perform imaging services or have licensed ambulatory surgery centers.
This tax will affect hundreds of physicians, including some primary care practices. RIMS is moving quickly to challenge the legality of this tax.

Coalition Urges Repeal of New Tax on Health Care

Patients, advocates, and medical providers united in opposition to the 2% gross receipts tax on outpatient medical imaging and surgical procedures. A press conference was held on October 25 at the Rhode Island Department of Health.

BCBSRI will require prior authorization for imaging

RIMS has opposed this regrettable step by BCBSRI for six years and delayed its implementation. This new requirement does not serve the best interest of patients and represents an additional burden upon primary care practices. RIMS plans to monitor the implementation of preauthorization and will seek the cooperation of its members and of Blue Cross in this effort. Read more

 

Good news regarding UnitedHealthcare

UnitedHealthcare has entered into a regulatory settlement agreement related to alleged violations of various state laws governing claims payment and claims management. Under the settlement, UHC has agreed to “resolve essentially all regulatory matters prior to the effective date of the agreement and to establish an efficient and transparent framework for evaluating and regulating performance over the next three years.” Read more
